Can't blame a guy for wanting to live. I'm not very inclined to give the Muslims the benefit of the doubt, but it is just possible that they suggested this to him as a way of letting everyone get out of this with their pride intact - mullahs get to keep this insane evil law on the books but no-one gets hurt. In principle it's very bad, but you could give points to someone trying to work within the system rather than standing on principle.
